Believe it or not, I am getting work accomplished in the studio. I am working on a very old project, a railing that was part of a trade with our house architect. It is the last railing I intend to work on as an entire project. After this railing, I will be switching over completely to smaller work focused on chasing and repoussé in the form of jewelry and small artworks. I've decided that smaller projects suit my lifestyle best, as a work-at-home-mom and also my personality best.
For the railing, I have been making a semi-3D duck. I'm working on 2 chased halves, which will be put together and then welded among cattails and other marsh plants.
Here is the duck sketch

and here are the metal duck halves in progress, worked only on stakes so far.

I will leave much of the steel background around the ducks, to give the illusion that the ducks are transitioning from 2D to 3D space, a quality that I especially love about bas-relief work.
I've also been working on more steel leaves, for sale in my Etsy shop and for an upcoming fall art festival. The leaves are endless!

After this batch of leaves is finished, I will switch to leaves strictly for jewelry or small art projects. I am teaching a 2 day leaf forging workshop the last week of September, in Minnesota, near Rochester. Please contact me if you'd like registration info for the class. The class will include tools, patterns, and should result in a nice sampling of finished leaves. The focus will be on steel leaves, but you can apply the technique to any forgeable metal.
